How to Make a Drawstring Bag With French Seams

Drawstring bags are perfect for keeping small things separate in a suitcase or in your purse. Don't let the term "French seam" scare you. Making a drawstring bag with French seams sounds fancy and difficult, but it is actually very simple. French seams are just seams that are enclosed and leave no threads hanging to catch on the items you put in your bag.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two pieces of fabric that measure 10 inches by 12 inches. Cut a strip for your drawstring that measures 2 inches by 25 inches.

    • 2

Stitch the strip for your drawstring first. Fold under the short ends of the strip 1/2 inch and stitch. Fold the long ends of the strip to meet in the middle. Fold the strip in half again, enclosing the raw edges inside the strip. Use pins to hold in place. Top stitch the entire length of the strip. Set the drawstring aside.

    • 3

Lay the two rectangular pieces with wrong sides together. Pin the two long sides and one short side of the rectangles. Leave the other short side for the opening of the bag.

    • 4

Sew around the three pinned sides of the bag leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Stop sewing 1-1/2 inches from the top of one side.

    • 5

Turn the fabric wrong side out. Clip the corners and press the seams with an iron.

    • 6

Sew a new seam (5/8-inch) all the way around the previously sewn sides of the bag to enclose the raw edges, leaving the top edge of one side open. Turn the bag right side out.

    • 7

Turn down the top edge of the bag 1-1/2 inches. Fold under the raw edge. Use pins to hold the fabric in place. Sew around the edge of the bag to form a casing for the drawstring.

    • 8

Insert the safety pin in one end of the drawstring. Insert the other safety pin into the other end of the drawstring and then attach it to the side seam near the opening in the casing.

    • 9

Push the loose end of the drawstring through the casing using the safety pin to help you. Pull it out through the same opening.

    • 10

Tie a knot in each end of the drawstring.
