Sponge-paint the walls. Sponge-painting is one of the easiest forms of faux finishing to master. Once the walls are painted the desired color, use a coordinating or complementary color and dab it on with a paint sponge. Work in a small area until the level of coverage is to your liking and then move to the next area. Try to maintain the same style and coverage for each section.

Cross-hatch the walls. Cross-hatching is a different form of faux finishing. In this technique, paint the walls your desired base color. Then choose a lighter color for the cross-hatching. Use a very large brush and make quick and light alternating brush strokes on the walls in an X pattern.

Rag-rub the walls. Rag-rubbing is very similar to sponge-painting but it produces a different effect. Take your secondary paint color and apply a small amount to a rag. Rub the rag into the wall and work in a pattern of your choice. Repeatedly add paint to your rag as needed. Again, work in one small section and then move to the next.

Apply a coating over the walls. You can use a metallic or pearlescent top coat on walls. Once the base coat is dry, take your top coat and use a regular paintbrush. Paint it on the walls very lightly and allow it to dry. If you want a more dramatic effect, apply more coats as needed.

Apply plaster to the walls. This form of faux finishing is designed to give a wall an old-world appeal. Use venetian plaster and a trowel and lightly apply the plaster to the wall in an irregular pattern. Do not use too much; you just want a light texture to the walls. Wipe off any excess as necessary. Give the plaster time to dry and then cover it in the paint color of your choice.
