How to Make a Toddler Pillow Case

A toddler pillow can be useful and comforting for a toddler both at home and occasions away from home when the toddler must sleep. Toddler pillows are smaller than adult pillows, which makes them comfortable and easy to carry around. Make a toddler pillow case out of colorful fabric and cover your toddler's pillow with a pillow case they are sure to admire and enjoy.

  • Tape measure
  • Fabric (approximately 1 yard)
  • Disappearing fabric pen
  • Straight edge ruler
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the pillow to get the dimensions. Add 1 inch to the width measurement and 4.25 inches to the length measurement. If you do not have a pillow and are planning to make one, a suggested size for a toddler pillow is 15-by-21 inches. Add the extra width and length measurement to make a pillowcase for a pillow this size.

    • 2

Fold the fabric with the wrong sides out and the right sides facing in. Position the folded fabric so that the selvage edges (the edges with a white band or printing) are at the top and the folded edge is nearest to you. Straighten the fabric so that there are no wrinkles. Align the selvage edges so they are straight.

    • 3

Measure the length of the pillowcase up from the fold and measure the width of the pillowcase parallel to the fold. Draw lines along these measurements to draw the outline of the pillowcase. The folded edge is one of the width sides. Cut along the lines to cut out the pillowcase. Do not cut the folded edge.

    • 4

Pin the two length edges together and sew a straight seam along both length edges using a ½-inch seam allowance.

    • 5

Fold under the raw edge along the pillowcase opening ¼-inch and press with the iron. Sew this hem in place. Fold under the opening 2 inches and press with the iron. Sew this hem in place, sewing 1/8-inch away from each folded edge.

    • 6

Turn the pillowcase right side out and press the entire pillowcase well.

    • 7

Fold the top 2 inches down along the opening of the pillowcase and press this fold. Pin this fold in place. Sew 1/8-inch away from each folded edge. This will create a reinforced band along the edge of the pillowcase. Remove the pins to finish the pillowcase.
