How to Arrange Furniture Around a Corner Fireplace

Save

It looks so cozy and exudes such a feeling of warmth. You see the corner fireplace and imagine sipping hot cocoa next to it on cold winter nights. Then you actually move into the house and realize the corner fireplace may have become your own personal decorating nightmare. Take heart and a deep breath. Rather than trying to figure out how you're going to decorate "around" it, allow it to become the focal point of your room and decorate "with" it. It's easier than you think, and you'll be enjoying it sooner than you think.

  • Start with the seating. The coziest way to decorate around a corner fireplace is to create intimate seating for you and your family. Position your sofa parallel to the fireplace. Place chairs adjacent to each corner of the sofa so that they face each other. Make sure they aren't too close to the fireplace because you want to ensure comfort, which does not include getting too warm next to the flames. By placing the seating in this manner, you open the area up to easy conversations in an atmosphere that allows guests to enjoy the glow of the fireplace at the same time.

  • Position your tables. You can do several things with tables now that your seating is in place. A sofa table along the back side of the couch will provide the perfect spot for soft lighting. Place buffet lamps on either end, and add a vase of flowers or books or photos to complete it.

Anchor your seating with a coffee table that is easily accessed from all seating areas but not so large that it overpowers the room. Remember, the focal point is the fireplace, not the table. As long as there is still room for guests to maneuver in and around the seating area, feel free to include a couple of end tables and lamps on either side of the chairs. Don't feel that you have to produce a mirror image effect. One end table next to one of the chairs will also suffice.

  • Create your entertainment area. The hardest part about a room with a corner fireplace is answering the question of where to put your television. Attach a flat screen television above the fireplace. You can even give it the look of art on your mantle by positioning it directly atop the mantle and allowing it to lean. You will still have to secure it to the wall behind it, but the effect is fabulous.

  • Complete the room. Place a secretary and free standing bookcase along one of the walls adjacent to the fireplace. This is a perfect place to display your favorite books and hide stereo components. For larger rooms add a comfortable reading area in a far corner. This can double as a play area for the kids who will be close enough for you to keep an eye on without disturbing the quaint seating section you've created.
