How to Sew a Monsters, Inc. Boo Costume

Boo is one of the most popular characters from Disney/Pixar's Monsters, Inc. movie. Because of this, many children may want to dress up as Boo for Halloween or another costumed event or party. Unfortunately, Boo costumes can be hard to find. Plus, if you do find one, they are usually expensive. However, Boo's costume is incredibly simple and easy to recreate. With basic sewing skills, you can custom make your own inexpensive Boo costume, no matter the size.

Things You'll Need

  • Pink jersey fabric
  • Fabric scissors
  • Pink thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Purple jersey fabric
  • Purple thread
  • Elastic
  • White socks
  • 2 pink hair ties
  • For the nightgown, cut out two pieces of pink fabric that are each as wide as the child's shoulders plus 4 inches and long enough to reach from the child's neck to her calves.

  • Sew the two pieces of pink fabric together, right sides facing each other, along each longer edge of the fabric. Leave an opening of about 6 inches at the top of each longer side for the arm holes.

  • Sew together the top of the nightgown (just above the arm holes), leaving an opening of about 4 inches in the middle for the collar.

  • Hem the collar and the bottom of the nightgown. For the sleeves, cut two pieces of pink fabric, each 12 inches wide and long enough to reach from your child's shoulder to her forearm.

  • Fold each sleeve piece in half length-wise and sew together the edges opposite the fold. Hem one end of the sleeve and attach the other end to one of the arm holes.

  • Fold the purple fabric in half. With the child lying down on the fabric, trace the outline of her legs, starting at the waist, moving down each leg, then up each leg to the crotch. Add 3 inches to each side of this tracing and cut out two identical pieces of fabric from this measurement.

  • Sew the two purple pieces together along each side of each leg (right sides facing each other). Hem the bottom of each leg.

  • Hem the top of the leggings, leaving an opening of about 1 inch. Cut a piece of elastic that is long enough to go around the child's waist.

  • Thread the elastic through the waistband through the 1 inch opening. Sew each end of the elastic together and sew the 1 inch opening closed.

  • Pair the costume with some white socks and use two pink hair elastics to put the child's hair in pig tails.
