How to Decorate with a Sectional Sofa
Decorate around a sectional sofa in your living room or family room to make the space more functional, comfortable and stylish. Sectional sofas provide extra seating in tight spaces and make conversations easy as everyone is sitting together in a natural conversational setting. Watching TV, playing board games, entertaining friends or simply discussing your day will be more comfortable and relaxing when your space is decorated in a peaceful way. Use other furniture, accessories and color to make the sectional sofa stand out as a focal point or blend in with the rest of your decor. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Use the colors in the fabric of your sectional sofa to inspire the color scheme or theme for your room. If the sofa is neutral, choose one bright, dark or contrasting color to thread through the room. For example, if the sofa is gray, use bright pink, red or yellow as an accent color; if the sofa is chocolate brown, turquoise would be a good choice for an accent color.

2
Paint the walls in a color that lets the sofa be noticed if you're using it as a focal point. For example, a bold or bright paint color such as red or yellow would work if your sofa is white, black or cream. The wall color and sofa color should be contrasting colors. You can, however, pull them together by adding a pillow on the sofa in the same color as the wall. If you don't want the sofa to be a focal point, use a muted neutral tone on the walls that will allow the sectional to blend in. For example, with a tan sectional that you don't want to draw attention to, paint the walls a cream color so the sofa doesn't get lost in the wall coloring but doesn't stand out either.

3
Use an ottoman or coffee table in front of the sofa. Decorate it with coffee table books, photo albums or a tray holding a teapot, wine glasses or a bowl of fruit (even faux fruit will work). Place a throw over the back or arm of the sectional or over an ottoman. Place at least one end table on one end of the sectional to hold a lamp, candles or other accessories.

4
Add artwork, pillows and other accessories to the walls, tables and other furniture that match your color scheme and theme. If your sofa is black and you're using a black and white color scheme, add white pillows, white candles, white roses or other touches of white and black throughout the rest of the room. Using the same example, add a small touch of color such as red by adding one red pillow, vase or rose.

Tips & Warnings
Avoid over-decorating as that makes the space feel cluttered and untidy. Sometimes, less is more--especially when decorating. By not over-decorating, every piece used will stand out and be noticed.
