How to Hang a Chinese Fan

There are two styles of Chinese fans, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the oval fan and the folding fan. Folding fans depict painted scenes on paper. The paper is then folded and bamboo sticks are inserted at the folds for support. They can be up to 60 inches wide when fully opened and make an attractive wall decoration. Chinese fans are relatively light and can be hung using double-sided tape and a picture hook to secure the bottom.

Things You'll Need

  • Chinese fan
  • Double-sided tape
  • Picture hook
  • Level
  • Decide where you want to hang your fan. Open the fan to its full width and set it face down on a clean surface.

  • Cut seven pieces of tape to position on the back of the fan.

  • Two pieces of bamboo extend outward from the pivot screw at the base of the fan. Use these as your starting points. The remaining bamboo sticks extend outward at equal distances, and resemble the rays of the sun. At the next set of "rays", place a piece of tape on each side of the fan, 1 inch from the edge of the paper.

  • From there, count three sticks more toward the center, and 2 inches from the center; place two pieces of tape, one on each side.

  • Count two more sticks from the center and place two more pieces of tape 1 inch from the edge of the paper, one on each side.

  • Place your last piece of tape on the bamboo stick that sits perpendicular to the two sticks at the base, 1 inch from the edge of the paper.

  • Use a level (or a partner's eyes if you haven't got a level) to make sure the fan is not crooked.

  • When you have found the perfect position, put a picture hook at the bottom of the fan, underneath the pivot.
