How to Remove Polyurethane Glue

Polyurethane glue is a highly effective adhesive used primarily for general woodworking. When this fast-acting glue hardens onto a surface, it can create what may seem like an everlasting bond. Because of its properties, polyurethane glue is one of the most difficult adhesives to remove by traditional methods. Using the proper cleaning materials is key to successful removal. Acetone is a chemical solvent commonly found in nail polish removers that can help dissolve the glue and ease removal.

Things You'll Need

  • Acetone
  • Warm water
  • Latex gloves
  • Rag or cotton pad
  • Plastic scraper
  • Prepare a well-ventilated area to prevent inhaling hazardous fumes from the acetone. Open a window if your workspace is indoors.

  • Put on a pair of protective gloves, and apply a small amount of the chemical to a rag or cotton pad. Wipe it directly onto the glue stain, being cautious not to touch any unaffected areas as excessive acetone may cause damage.

  • Allow time for the acetone to soak the polyurethane before attempting to remove it. Wait at least five to 10 minutes for the glue to soften.

  • Loosen the softened glue with a plastic scraper until it has been completed lifted from the surface. Simply apply more of the remover if any stubborn film persists.

  • Wrap the remnants of glue in a paper towel and dispose of them. Wash the affected surface of any stubborn film using an appropriate household cleaner.
