There's nothing like looking into a pantry filled with colorful creations from the past year's harvest. Whether you've been canning for your whole life, or it's a technique you've recently picked up, the clear glass jars of jams, relishes, pickles, and even plain vegetables represent time spent in the kitchen. But unlike the store-bought cans of veggies that we toss into the recycle bin after opening, high quality glass canning jars are expensive and require upkeep and proper storage so they can be used for years to come.
Things You'll Need
- Sturdy cardboard file boxes with lids
- Cardboard box dividers
Find a sturdy, easily accessible, but out-of-the-way wall in your home with storage shelves. It may be your laundry room, high up on a wall in an extra, rarely used bathroom, a basement area, or in the garage.
Cut box dividers to fit perfectly into file boxes, with enough room for lids when full.
Clean empty jars and lids well with soap and water, and let them dry completely. Screw lids on and place empty jars upside-down in the boxes.
When a box is full, stuff newspaper in between the dividers to close any gaps and prevent jars from breaking. Put the boxes on the shelves.
Tips & Warnings
- If you don't have shelves or can't install them, lidded file boxes can be stacked against a wall, up to three boxes high.
