Sweep and vacuum the slate floor to remove dust and debris.

Place a cleaning pad on the bottom of the steam mop, add distilled water and plug the mop into an electrical outlet. Allow the mop to heat for the amount of time indicated by the manufacturer. Most steam mops have a light that indicates when it is ready for use.

Leave the mop plugged in and begin mopping in the far corner of the room. Simply push the mop forward to release steam onto the slate floor, and then pull the mop back to lift dust and dirt onto the cleaning pad. Continue this process for the entire floor.
