How to Use a Steam Mop on Slate Floor

Using a steam mop on slate is a quick way to achieve clean, dry floors. Steam mops do not use chemicals, which is an advantage if you suffer from allergies and saves you from the cost of expensive cleaning solutions. Because the mop uses steam to clean the floor, water usage is considerably less than the traditional method of mopping, and the floors dry quickly and without streaking. Things You'll Need

• Broom and/or vacuum
• Cleaning pad
• Steam mop
• Distilled water

Instructions

1. Sweep and vacuum the slate floor to remove dust and debris.

2. Place a cleaning pad on the bottom of the steam mop, add distilled water and plug the mop into an electrical outlet. Allow the mop to heat for the amount of time indicated by the manufacturer. Most steam mops have a light that indicates when it is ready for use.

3. Leave the mop plugged in and begin mopping in the far corner of the room. Simply push the mop forward to release steam onto the slate floor, and then pull the mop back to lift dust and dirt onto the cleaning pad. Continue this process for the entire floor.

Tips & Warnings

• If your brand of steam mop uses disposable cleaning pads, you might substitute a washable microfiber cloth instead to reduce costs.
