It happens to even the best cooks. You prepare a delicious meal in your stainless-steel cookware only to find a black, burnt residue left in the bottom of the pan. Despite your best efforts, you cannot remove the black stain from the pan. Don't throw in the towel just yet. You can successfully remove black from stainless steel pans by following the proper steps. Your pan will look as good as new once you’re finished.
Things You'll Need
- Dish soap
- Nylon scouring pad
- Dry rags
- Table salt
- Baking soda
- Wood spoon
Fill the pan with warm, soapy water just enough to cover the entire blackened area of the pan. Allow the water to sit in the pan for about an hour.
Place the pan on the stove and bring the water to a boil. Allow it to boil for 15 minutes.
Let the water cool until it is at a temperature suitable for your hands. Use a nylon scouring pad to scrub the black residue from the pan.
Clean the pan with hot water and soap. Rinse and dry the pan thoroughly.
Fill the pan with equal parts white vinegar and water if the black mark is still on the pan. Cover the pan with a lid, then bring the water to a boil on the stove. Allow it to boil for 10 minutes, remove from the heat and let the vinegar solution soak into the pan overnight. Dump the vinegar water in the morning and wash in hot, soapy water.
Use salt and baking soda as an alternative method for cleaning the black from a stainless steel pan. Place just enough water in the pan to cover the blackened area. Pour a liberal amount of salt, followed by a generous amount of baking soda, into the pan. Use a wooden spoon to stir the mixture, then boil the water on the stove. Continue stirring while the water is boiling, scraping the bottom of the pan with the wooden spoon. Continue scraping until the black residue is gone from the pan. Wash the pan with a nylon scouring pad and hot, soapy water to remove excess black residue.
