Living room ledges are often called plant ledges, but you can do so much more to decorate them than just sticking a few silk plants there and calling it a day. These deep ledges are built right into the wall, usually just below the ceiling, and offer a creative decorating space for a savvy homeowner. Here's how to decorate your ledge in a way that will not only reflect your personality but add instant visual appeal to your living room.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Personal decorative items
  • Green silk plant (optional)
  1. Step 1

Look around your home for items you can display on the living room ledge. Unique collections, artwork, candles, pottery and stuff stored in closets might be perfect for the space.

  2. Step 2

Keep in mind the décor of your living room while you are looking for items. If you have decorated the room in the French country style, for example, you probably don't want to display your collection of ancient, rusted weapons on the ledge.

  3. Step 3

Select items that mean something to you. This will make the ledge even more interesting and stimulate conversation among your guests. If you're a teacher, for example, try arranging a small antique doll chair or desk next to a stack of old leather-bound books. Place the books in front of a worn chalkboard, perhaps with a favorite saying or the family's name written on it in chalk.

  4. Step 4

Arrange the items in groups. Groups of three work best. Choose items for the groups that are related (by theme, color or material) but have varying heights, as seen in the example in Step 3.

  5. Step 5

Add that silk plant. While a lot of green silk plants looks overblown, decorating with one tasteful plant adds a fresh feeling to the display. Choose a high-quality plant and keep it dusted. Place the plant between groups, or go ahead and add it as a fourth item if it fits well. In our example, the plant could be placed on the antique chair.
