Instructions

    • 1

Take a small razor blade and scrape off as much of the rust as you can. Many people find this easier than using sandpaper alone. Leave the rust that's too difficult to get off with the blade alone for another method.

    • 2

Put on your safety goggles, rubber gloves, and respirator (dust mask). Sprinkle a few drops of mineral spirits onto the file. Take a piece of sandpaper, and rub the rust off with even strokes going down the length of the blade. Be sure to use the mineral spirits in a well-ventilated area, as they are flammable, and have been linked to neurological damage in people.

    • 3

Keep your safety goggles, rubber gloves, and respirator on. Rub away the mineral spirits with regular paper towels. Remember that the paper towels with mineral spirits on them are now flammable. Dispose of towels with mineral spirits safely at your county's hazardous waste drop-off sites. If there's still rust on the files, put a small amount of naval jelly on the rusted area, and let it sit for at least half an hour. Rinse the jelly off with water to remove the rust.

    • 4

Remove remaining rust by putting the rough edge of a sheet of sandpaper face down on the metal file, and scrub vigorously. Be sure to get all visible rust, because even a small amount can spread quickly, causing even more damage.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't want to use the mineral spirits, you may be able to use the naval jelly method alone. Some people use one or the other or both. What you choose depends on your personal preference, and how rusted the metal is.
