How to Clean Textured Tile

Installing a tile floor in your home is practical. Tile is a popular flooring material due to its durability, shine and beauty. However textured tile with its many nooks and crannies can present a challenge when it comes to cleaning. Fortunately, using basic household items you can get the entire surface of the tile clean.

Things You'll Need

  • Broom or duster
  • Mop
  • Soft bristle scrub brush
  • Bathroom or tile cleaning product
  • Bucket
  • Soft cloths
  • Spray bottle
  • White vinegar

Sweep or dust the surface of the tile to make sure all dry dirt, dust and other debris is picked up. Textured tile has variegated surfaces, so dust and sweep first in the direction of the texture, then in the opposite direction and finally diagonally to ensure that each crevice and peak of the tiles is swept.

Mop the floor with a damp mop that has been soaked in clear, warm water and wrung out.

Using tile cleaner or bathroom cleaning product, scrub tiles with the scrub brush in a circular motion to ensure that the cleanser spreads over the entire surface of the tile.

Rinse the tile surface thoroughly with clear, warm water.

Run a soft, dry cloth over the tiles to ensure that all the excess moisture is absorbed, as tile that is left wet is an ideal breeding ground for mildew or mold.

Tips & Warnings

  • To prevent mildew and mold from growing, fill a spray bottle with vinegar and spritz the vinegar on the grout and tile in particularly dark or moisture-prone areas. This deodorizes the tile and disinfects it while prohibiting the growth of mold.
  • Do not vacuum textured tile with an upright vacuum, as the weight of the vacuum can scratch or damage the tile.
