Instructions

    • 1

Soak up any liquid by blotting the velvet using paper towels or cloths. Often, this is the only step that is needed to remove spills from velvet furniture.

    • 2

Mix 1/8 cup of dish detergent with 2 cups of water in a bucket. Stir the mixture vigorously until suds form.

    • 3

Apply the suds only--not the water--to the stain using a clean cloth. Soaking velvet in water can cause damage.

    • 4

Use a dry cloth to blot the stain until it fades. Repeat the above steps if the stain persists.

    • 5

Use a hair dryer to dry the area, or allow the velvet to air-dry completely. Once the area is dry, use a soft-bristled brush to help restore the nap of the fabric.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use a steamer to restore velvet's natural luster.

  • Blot stains on velvet with gentle pressure. Pressing too hard can cause damage to the fabric.
