Consider the obvious first. Bedrooms with hardwood floors need decorating touches that help to warm them. The best way to do this is with an area rug. If you aren't sure how to use an area rug, just take Martha Stewart's advice: "As the name implies, area rugs are meant to demarcate specific areas within a larger space." And further, "the goal is to strike a balance between the rug, the furniture, and the exposed hardwood floors," says Stewart.
Choose a rug that reflects the colors you plan to use in the bedroom. The pattern and texture is a matter of taste. Just be sure the rug is large enough to border the bed all the way around. Your feet should hit the rug and then some upon climbing out of bed.
The largest item in the bedroom is the bed, so the positioning of the rug will stem from where the bed is placed. In especially large rooms, a bed can be placed in the center of the room. In smaller rooms, beds are usually placed with the headboard resting against the wall with space for a nightstand on one or both sides. Once you've determined the placement of the bed, you are ready to lay the rug.
