How to Measure for a Table Cloth

A tablecloth is the foundation of a beautiful table setting. It will also protect your table from scratches and spills, and, when padded underneath, it protects dishes from chipping. Using the correct size tablecloth is important. One that is too large can become an obstacle. One that is too small can expose your table to damage. How do you know your tablecloth fits correctly? By measuring your table and applying a simple formula to determine the correct size tablecloth you need.

Measuring for the perfect tablecloth is a simple process. Whether or not you are proficient with math you will not have a problem figuring the correct size tablecloth for your table. Take precautions to protect the surface of your table before beginning. If possible use a cloth tape measure (most commonly used for sewing) to prevent scratching the table top.

Things You'll Need

• Tape measure.
• Pencil and paper.

Instructions

Table Shape

1. Use either a round or a square tablecloth for a round table.

2. Use an oval tablecloth for a round table with leaves inserted.

3. Use a square tablecloth for a square table.

4. Use an oblong tablecloth for a square or rectangular table with leaves inserted.

5. Use an oval or oblong tablecloth for an oval table depending on the table size.

Measuring the Table

1. Use a tape measure that won't scratch the table surface.

2. Measure the table length and write the number down.

3. Measure the table width and write the number down.

4. Measure the diameter (distance across a circle through its center point) of the round table or one side of a square table and write the number down.

Choose Length of the Drop

1. The drop is the part of the tablecloth that hangs over the side. A drop to the floor is 30" (this length not recommended for dining on carpeted floor).

2. Formal drop is 15".

3. Average drop is 10 to 12".

Size Formula for Oval, Oblong, or Rectangular Table

1. Multiply the chosen drop length by two.

2. Add that number to the table length.

3. Write this length figure down.

4. Multiply the chosen drop width by two.

5. Add that number to the table width.

6. Write this width figure down.

7. Final tablecloth dimensions are length by width.

Size Formula for Round or Square Table

1. Multiply the chosen drop length by two.

2. Add that number to the table diameter.

3. Write the figure down.

4. Final tablecloth dimensions are diameter plus drop.

Tips & Warnings

• If sewing your own tablecloth remember to add 1 1/4" to each final measurement for seam allowance.
