How to Remodel Entrance Doors

The entrance doors into your home are the first thing that neighbors and family members see. When someone walks through the entrance door of your home, you are making your first impression on them. Because this part of your home is so memorable, it is important to have an entrance that is fresh and updated. Remodeling your entrance doors with a fresh coat of paint can instantly update your home with minimal effort and money.

Things You'll Need

• Fine grit sandpaper
• Paint roller
• Two-inch paint brush
• Painting primer
• Exterior paint

Instructions

1. Remove the door. Before you can begin painting and remodeling your entrance door you need to first remove the door from its frame. Doing this is not necessary, but it will allow you to do the best job possible. Lay the door in a place where it will be easy to access as you remodel it.

2. Remove hardware. To avoid painted doorknobs and hinges, make sure you remove the hardware from your entrance door. Skipping this step will usually result in a poorly done paint job. Take a few extra minutes to prepare for painting by removing any hardware on the door.

3. Lightly sand the door. To make sure there are no major defects in your paint job, be sure to sand the door before painting. You do not need to completely sand the entire door so it is free of all previous paint. Instead, use a fine sandpaper to ensure that the door is smooth.

4. Use a primer. A good primer on your entrance door will help to keep your paint job from chipping and bubbling. Primers also help block any stains from bleeding through to your paint. Because you are painting a door that will see the elements, make sure you use a primer. Doing so will help protect your wood door from moisture.

5. Apply paint. Use a roller and a 2-inch brush to paint the door with an exterior paint. Once the paint has had a chance to dry, apply a second coat. Repeat as necessary.
