How to Clean Granite Steps

Kimbry Parker

Granite is a durable stone that adds elegance to any home. More costly than many other similar materials, granite can withstand a lot of wear and tear. Granite steps are ideal for adding beauty and practicality to your home.

It is important to keep granite steps clean so that they maintain their original luster and shine. Although granite steps can be cleaned similarly to other floor surfaces in the home, there are certain measures that can be taken to ensure the granite steps are properly cleaned without harming the stone.

Warning

Never use citric or highly acidic products to clean granite.

  1. Sweep up any loose dirt on the granite steps. Use a broom and dust pan or a hose attachment on your vacuum cleaner.

  2. Dilute a few cap-fulls of bleach into a bucket of warm water. Wipe the steps with the mixture to disinfect the steps prior to cleaning. Go over the steps with a dry cloth. The bleach and water may cause the steps to look hazy or streaky so you will still need to clean them after disinfecting them.

  3. Mix a few drops of mild dishwashing soap into a clean bucket with warm water. Work the soap into the water until you see suds.

  4. Wet a soft sponge or rag with the soapy water. Wipe the granite steps thoroughly.

  5. Rinse the sponge or rag in the bucket of water when it starts to get dirty. Continue cleaning the steps.

  6. Use a cloth with plain, hot water to wipe up the soap suds from the steps. Rinse the rag to remove the soap and repeat until all of the steps are free of soap residue.

  7. Wipe the granite steps with a dry microfiber cloth. This will soak up any excess water and remove any leftover soap residue.

  8. Apply a granite cleaner polish to the steps after cleaning. You do not need to do this every time you clean the steps, but do so periodically to restore the shine. Follow the instructions on the product for cleaning with granite cleansing products.
