Do Kitchen Remodeling on a Budget
Do Kitchen Remodeling on a Budget
Gracey/Morguefile

The kitchen is the heart of a home and also one of the more expensive rooms to remodel. In this economy, expensive kitchen remodeling is out and saving money is in. Fortunately, it is still possible to have a beautiful kitchen on a budget. There's no need to break the bank doing kitchen remodeling.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick a theme and base all design elements on the chosen theme. Current trends show that both ultra modern contemporary and rustic, homey kitchen themes are popular. Choose from a French Country or shabby chic kitchen. On the modern side, retro 50s kitchens are popular as are ultra high tech modern kitchens.

  2. Step 2

Spend time looking at design magazines and websites evaluating accessories, fixtures and color to come up with kitchen remodeling ideas.

  3. Step 3

Change colors and paint the walls. Think outside the box and go for avant garde colors in the kitchen. According to color experts at Sherwin Williams the number one kitchen color trend is mixing colors for contrast. Nature based hues such as brown and green are a popular combination. Ethnic colors such as purples and reds are also favored and a more modern look can be achieved by contrasting earth tones with bright, almost florescent bursts of color. Visit the Pantone website (see Resources for links) for cutting edge color inspiration. Pantone is the company that sets color trends for fashion and home industries worldwide.

  4. Step 4

Buy new hardware. From new cabinet knobs to a new kitchen faucet, new fixtures can inexpensively change the tenor of an entire room.

  5. Step 5

Install new kitchen lighting and ceiling fans. If it's been ten years or more since you've installed kitchen lighting and ceiling fans, it is past time for new ones. Be sure to take into account the overall theme when selecting lighting and other kitchen fixtures

  6. Step 6

Put in a new floor. This may sound expensive, but new kitchen flooring can be relatively cheap if you are willing to lay the tiles yourself. Stores such as Lowe's and Home Depot often hold workshops to teach homeowners the skills they need to install tiles.

  7. Step 7

Refinish or paint the cabinets. This gives a whole new look for very little money.

  8. Step 8

Hang new curtains or window treatments that complement the new kitchen design.
