1
Choose the color for your stain and sealer. Many products combine both stain and sealer in a single mixture; you will always want to use sealer as your first coat on the wood to increase durability and longevity. If you choose an individual sealer, select a clear one so that the stain provides color to your wood.

Decide whether or not you want to fill imperfections in the wood. Defects such as knots and holes are often left in wooden furniture and doors to add a rustic look. If you choose to fill these in, purchase wood filler to fill in the imperfections. Check the color against your stain; you may need to change the color of the wood filler before you use it on your door.

Lightly sand the surface of the doors to remove any wear marks or scratches. Sand with the grain of the wood, never against it or across it. Dust the doors when you are finished sanding to remove any remaining grit or dust.

Lay down the drop cloths to prevent stain from ruining the floors. Use a paintbrush to apply the sealer first; if you are using a combined stain-sealer, apply the first coat. Use a soft cloth, towel or rag to remove excess stain. Allow the stain to dry. Apply at least two coats of stain. You can choose to sand the doors in between each coat to be sure the stain is getting into the grain properly, but you must use steel wood instead of sandpaper to do this so that you don't rough up the door too much. Allow the stain to air dry when all coats are complete.
