How to Remove Sour Milk Odor From Carpet

Anyone who has ever left milk in the refrigerator past its recommended use date knows that horrid smell that emanates when the container lid is removed. If this container of spoiled milk is simply too overwhelming and slips from your hands as you writhe in terror, there's now a bigger problem to contend with--spilled milk may be nothing to cry over, but spilled sour milk can be. This catastrophe is best handled quickly.

Things You'll Need:

• Paper towels
• Plastic bag
• Baking soda
• Soft- to medium-bristle brush

1. Blot up as much of the spill as possible with paper towels. Bring a plastic bag with you so that you can place the soiled paper towel into it and discard the bag as soon as you're done to get them out of the house quickly.

2. Cover the area with baking soda by sprinkling it liberally all over the affected area.

3. Mist the area with a spray bottle filled with cold water to dampen the baking soda. The baking soda should become damp, but not over-saturated.

4. Allow the damp baking soda to sit on the affected area overnight so that it has plenty of time to dry.

5. Scrape the area in the morning with a soft- to medium-bristle brush to loosen the baking soda's grip on the carpet.

6. Vacuum the entire area to remove the baking soda and fluff the carpet back up.

Tips & Warnings

• Apply lemon juice liberally to any residual stain and allow it to soak for 15 minutes before spraying it with water and blotting it up with paper towels.
