How to Clean Old Indian Blankets

Indian blankets, also known as Native American or Navajo blankets, are works of expert craftsmanship. Each blanket is a unique and valuable adornment to any home. While Indian blankets can last for many years, their construction and age can make them susceptible to damage and, as such, should not be treated casually. Extend the longevity of your Indian blanket by knowing how to go about cleaning one properly.

Things You'll Need

• Absorbent cloth
• Dry cleaning solvent
• Vacuum

Instructions

1. Blot up any moisture that comes in contact with your blanket immediately with a clean, absorbent cloth. Treat stains by blotting with a small quantity of dry cleaning solvent.

2. Vacuum your blanket to remove dust and debris. Avoid beating or shaking out your blanket as it will further weaken the blanket's fibers and weaving.

3. Take your blanket to a professional who specializes in cleaning and repairing Indian blankets and rugs. Any attempt to wash your blanket on your own can result in loss of dye and other damage, particularly if the blanket is an antique.
