Things You'll Need:
- 1/3 cup butter
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 4 cups flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
-
Step 1
Heat the butter, sugar and milk, on medium heat, just until it is warm to the touch. Remove it from the stove and mix in the yeast until it dissolves. After 10 minutes the mixture should look foamy. Set it aside.
-
Step 2
Pour the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl. Mix the two ingredients. You may use white or whole wheat flour (or a combination).
-
Step 3
Add the eggs, oil and milk mixture into the flour bowl. Use a spoon to mix until it becomes difficult.
-
Step 4
Pour a thin layer of flour on your work area and knead the sweetbread dough, with your hands, until it is smooth. This will take about 10 minutes. You may need to flour your hands so the dough does not stick.
-
Step 5
Spray cooking oil on the inside of another large mixing bowl. Place the dough inside and turn it once, so some of the oil is transferred to the top of the dough. Place the bowl in a warm location, like the top of the stove, for about an hour. Cover it with a clean dish towel. The dough will rise to be double its original size.
-
Step 6
Punch the sweetbread dough with your fist to let the air out. If you are making rolls, separate the dough into 10 to 12 sections and roll them out. Place them on a greased cookie sheet and let them rise again, covered in the warm location. For a loaf, place the dough into a greased loaf pan and let it rise, covered. This will take about 25 minutes.
-
Step 7
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F. Place the sweetbread in the oven. When the rolls or bread are a golden brown on top, they are done, about 25 minutes.
