Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Heart-shaped cake pan
  • Cake mix or ingredients to bake a scratch cake
  • Frosting in assorted colors
  • Frosting bags with assorted decorator's tips
  • 2 pipe cleaners
  • Satin ribbon
  • Waxed paper
  • Large sheet of paper and a marker
  1. Step 1

In the heart-shaped pan, bake the cake according to the mix or recipe instructions.

  2. Step 2

Using a marker, trace your cake pan shape onto paper and sketch the basic design you want on top of the cake. It doesn't have to be perfect, since no one will ever see it.

Place a piece of waxed paper over the top of your sketch.

In the next step, you are going to frost directly onto the wax paper.

  3. Step 3

Fill your frosting bags with colored frosting and attach appropriate tips. Using your sketch as a guide, frost your picture.

Keeping the wax paper flat, place it in the freezer until the frosted designs are frozen SOLID.

  4. Step 4

You may find that you don't need to add all the details from your sketch to make it cute.

  5. Step 5

Make a loop in one end of two pipe cleaners.

  6. Step 6

    Cut several lengths of ribbon.

  7. Step 7

Thread the ribbons through the pipe cleaner loops and tie securely.

  8. Step 8

Trim the pipe cleaners to about an inch long.

  9. Step 9

Put your base frosting and borders on the cake.

  10. Step 10

CAREFULLY peel the frosted designs off the wax paper and place on the cake. Poke the pipe cleaners in at the tops of the hats, letting the ribbons trail off the sides of the cake.
