Patio furniture is exposed to the elements -- sometimes all year long. Moisture turns into mildew, particularly in hot and humid weather when the furniture is in a shady area, like the north side of a house. That said it is not very tough to remove the mildew and keep it from growing again in the future. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Garden sprayer
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Toothbrush

Instructions

    • 1

      Move the furniture to an open area if it is not already there. Mildew-removing agents can release strong fumes that can be hazardous.

      Remove the cushions and other fabric from the furniture. This can get damaged or stained while using the regular solution for cleaning the furniture.

      Mix 1 gallon of water with 1 cup of ammonia. Add white vinegar and baking soda to the solution. Use approximately 1/4 cup of each. Do not add vinegar or baking soda to clean wicker.

      Put the mixture in a garden sprayer and spray the mixture at places where the mildew is growing.

      Use an old toothbrush to gently scrub the surface where the mildew is growing. This is helpful for cleaning the small areas.

      Rinse the entire furniture piece with warm warm.

      Dry with a clean towel.

Tips & Warnings

  • For the cushions and fabric buy the mildew remover which is specifically made to be used with fabric.

  • Always wear rubber gloves while cleaning to protect your hands.

  • If your furniture is delicate then add more water to the above mentioned mixture to avoid any damage to the furniture.

  • Consider moving your piece to a sunnier area to discourage mildew.
