1
Measure and cut your boards to length. Once the length is established, decide the amount of the reveal. An eighth inch works well when creating faux beams. Use a measuring tape and a speed square to mark 1/8 inch from the edge along the length of the boards. Do the same for the other edge of the boards.
-
2
Lay one of the boards on your workbench. Set another board on its end so that it is lined up with the 1/8 inch reveal line. Use a clamp to secure it. Do the same with a third board.

3
Secure the boards in place with the nail gun and pin nails. Make sure you drive the nails in at a slight angle and from the bottom so the boards are stable. Space the nails up to 8 inches apart. If you need to, you can use a piece of scrap wood to rest against the boards as you nail them.
-
4
Use a piece of scrap wood as a support while you nail the last board in place, creating a box--the faux beam. Use painter's chalk or wood filler to fill in all the nail holes.
-
5
Decide where you would like to place your beam. If you are doing one faux beam, then it should be in the center of the room. Use a measuring tape or a laser to find the center of the room.
-
6
Use nails to secure the nailer board for the faux beam to the ceiling. Secure the board more securely to the ceiling with deck screws.
-
7
Slip the faux beam over the nailer board and use pin nails and the nail gun to secure it. Space the nails 6 inches apart.
-
8
Finish the faux beam in the manner you choose. Either with stain, paint or some other manner. Repeat the process from Step 1 for any additional faux beams.
