1
Examine all the parts of quilting. Every process in quilt making needs an area dedicated to it. Design, fabric, hand sewing, machine sewing and cutting are all aspects of quilting that need an area of the room. Areas can do double duty, but all parts of quiltmaking and sewing need to be addressed.

Choose sturdy and durable furniture. Cutting tables shouldn't wobble; chairs should be solid and comfortable. Fabric is surprisingly heavy when stacked up, so make sure that shelves are heavy-duty.Good lighting is essential, both general room light and close-up task lighting. Use natural light, or natural spectrum light bulbs, as much as possible for true color fabric choices.

Add the extra touches to make your studio special. A flannel wall is a useful way to design quilts, so dedicate at least 6 feet of space here if possible. Hang baskets for attractive storage units. Paint the walls a warm eggshell or yellow for a cozy feeling. Hang wall quilts or decorative pieces of fabric to brighten up the room. Add a stereo or digital music player, a coffee maker and a mini fridge. A rocking chair with a floor lamp in the corner is a comfortable place to hand quilt and can help to increase your quilt production.
