Leather needs protection from mold & mildew

Fine leather apparel and accessories are expensive so start preventing mold and mildew the day you bring them home. Prevent the damage that mold and mildew can cause by not allowing them to start. Once mold becomes established in leather, it can be nearly impossible to eradicate. However, you can take some simple steps when storing your leather goods and apparel to prevent mold and mildew from ever happening. The same steps can prevent mold mildew from leather jackets, shoes, belts, saddles, and other sports equipment.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fan, Air conditioner, dehumidifier
  • Sunlight
  • Hangers, stands
  • Aerosol protecting sprays
  • Leather wax products
  • Paraformaldehyde
  1. Step 1

Hang or position your leather goods so that air can flow around them to prevent mold and mildew. For coats, jackets, chaps and other garments hang them on a hanger so that they are not touching other garments. Place shoes, boots, and hats on crates, racks, or shelves that allow airflow around all sides of the item. Hang saddles, bridles and other sports equipment on a sawhorse, hook, or rack that allows airflow from all directions.

  2. Step 2

Reduce humidity in the storage area and supplement airflow. You can reduce humidity by running a dehumidifier or air conditioner when necessary. Increase airflow by using fans, exhaust fans, and air purifiers.

  3. Step 3

Spray leather goods with a low aerosol protective spray designed specifically for your leather. You may be offered these sprays when you purchase leather goods. Shoes, saddles, and other items have special wax that can protect the leather and prevent mold and mildew from starting.

  4. Step 4

Take your leather items out occasionally during long periods of not being used. Place them in the sunlight and fresh air for 30 minutes.

  5. Step 5

Store leather goods for extended periods with Paraformaldehyde following the manufacturers’ directions.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your items clean, dirt helps mildew and mold get started.
  • Spraying items with a water repellent and soil resistant spray may help prevent mildew and mold.
  • Never store leather goods in a humid basement or attic storage that lacks airflow.
