Things You'll Need:
- Thread
- Needle
- Scissors
- Pins
-
Step 1
Find a color of thread that matches your fabric as closely as possible. Cut a length of thread. Cut the length of thread twice as long as the piece needing hemming if it is just a short area.
-
Step 2
Insert one end of the thread through the needle. Pull the length of thread half-way through to double the thread.
-
Step 3
Wrap the two ends around your index finger two times. Use your thumb to roll the thread off your finger. Pull to tighten the knot.
-
Step 4
Fold under the raw edges of the fabric to the back of the clothing item. Pin the fabric in place.
-
Step 5
Insert the needle into the fabric that is turned under at the back of the hem so the knot will not show through to the outside of your clothing. Pull the thread all the way through.
-
Step 6
Push the tip of the needle into the fold of the hem. Measure about 1/2 inch. Poke the tip of the needle out of the top of the fold of fabric. Pull the thread out completely.
-
Step 7
Take the tip of the needle and pick up two or three threads from the front of the clothing item. Continue to go through the folded hem. Pull the thread all the way through.
-
Step 8
Repeat Steps 6 and 7 until you have gone all the way around your hem.
-
Step 9
Tie a knot in the thread by inserting the needle through the folded part of the hem. Stick the needle through the excess thread before pulling it all the way through to form the knot. Repeat to make a double knot.
-
Step 10
Use scissors to trim the thread.
