Afghan crochet or Tunisian crochet is different from standard crochet; when a cloth is finished in afghan crochet, there are vertical and horizontal bars. This stitch was primarily used to create only afghans until recently. Now there are many items, including scarves, dishcloths and towels, that are being created using this stitch. When on the last row of the item being created, it is important to know how to finish off the item so that it will look smooth and neat.

Things You'll Need:

  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors
  • Afghan Hook
  • Yarn

Finish the item to the last stitch. Insert the needle under the second vertical loop to the left of the hook. Bring the working yarn over the afghan hook and pull it through both hoops on the hook; there will be one loop on the hook at this point.

Insert the hook in the vertical loop of the next stitch. Bring the working yarn over the hook and pull it through so there will be one loop on the hook. Continue this across the row, until the last stitch.

Insert the hook into the last stitch of the row. Pull the yarn through the loops so there is only one loop on the afghan hook. Cut the yarn and pull it through the last loop and tighten. Thread the yarn needle with the tail of the yarn. Weave it through the stitches of the last row. Trim any ends of yarn that are showing.
