Make Liquid Dishwashing Soap

I use a lot of liquid dishwashing soap. There always seems to be a dirty dish or 2 or 3 or 4....waiting for me in the sink. I think liquid dishwashing soap is expensive and I decided to figure out how to make it myself. Making your own liquid dishwashing soap is not only easy and a real money saver, but very effective on dirty dishes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Use a cheese grater to grate a bar of pure, unscented soap such as Ivory soap. You will need to grate about ½ of a cup. You can also buy soap flakes. Soap flakes are available in most grocery stores.

    • 2

Add approximately 3 ½ cups of very hot water to a lidded plastic container. Add the grated soap or soap flakes to the hot water and stir. Allow the grated soap to melt and dissolve in the hot water. Continue to stir until the soap has completely dissolved.

    • 3

Allow the melted soap and water to cool for about 15 minutes.

    • 4

Add ½ of a cup of glycerin and 1 teaspoon of lemon oil. Glycerin can be purchased at a pharmacy, certain grocery stores and online. Lemon oil can be purchased in natural pharmacies, health food stores and online.

    • 5

Whisk the ingredients together. When the mixture has reached room temperature, whisk again for at least 1 to 2 minutes to blend.

    • 6

Fill your dishwashing soap dispenser with your freshly made dishwashing soap. Use as you would normally use store bought dishwashing soap. Store the remainder in a tightly lidded container.
