How to Use Decorative Edge Scissors for Projects

How to Use Decorative Edge Scissors for Projects thumbnail
Decorative scissors can create pieces of art.

Whether you like pinking, deckle, zig-zag, scalloped or other types of edges, it is simple to use decorative scissors to transform paper craft projects into custom works that reflect your personal style. Despite their association with scrapbooks, decorative scissors are not limited to just scrapbooking projects. They can be used on picture mats, gift tags, birthday cards, thank-you notes, holiday gifts and just about any creative art project you or your child have in mind. With a little planning in advance, decorative scissors can change the way you see paper crafts---and add pizazz to your art projects.

Instructions

  1. Thank-You Notes

    • 1

Take the precut card stock and, using the bone folder, fold the card stock exactly in half at the 4-inch mark.

    • 2

Using the scalloped scissors, cut straight across the bottom edge of the top folded half of the card---which will create a decorative edge.

    • 3

Lightly dot the bottom inside of the card with glue, and place a piece of ribbon along the bottom half. To secure the ribbon, make sure you use enough glue---but not too much, as you don't want the glue seeping out the sides. When closed, the scalloped top edge will stand out against the color and pattern of the glued-on ribbon.

Stamp your thanks on the top outer half of the card using a special "Thank You" stamp and colored ink. You'll most likely find a variety of patterns, styles and colors at your local arts and crafts shop. Allow the card to dry for one hour to prevent smearing the ink.

    Gift Tags

    • 5

Using the pinking scissors, cut each side, all the way around the tag, to create decorative edges.

    • 6

Choose a stamp to decorate your tag. Consider the occasion. Is it for a baby shower? You'll probably find a baby booties stamp. Or how about a wedding? Flowers and bells abound in stamps. Stamp one side of the gift tag in the center with your chosen image.

    • 7

Write the recipient's name on the tag, using the calligraphy pen---and don't worry if you're not a calligraphy expert. When you write with this type of pen, your words appear elegantly drawn, far above a ball-point pen presentation, and will complement the decorative edges created by your pinking scissors.

    • 8

Punch a hole in the top left-hand corner of the gift tag using the hole punch, pull a piece of silk or satin ribbon through, then tie the ribbon in a bow.

    • 9
Scalloped scissors can also make custom gift tags festive.

Attach the gift tag to your wrapped present using craft glue, and allow one hour for the glue to dry clear. Your gift will make a good impression---even before it's opened.

Tips & Warnings

  • According to Scrapjazz.com, you shouldn't use more than two scissor patterns. Otherwise, your project might appear too jumbled. Look for decorating scissors with comfortable handles to avoid tiring your hands. Experiment on scrap pieces of paper before you make final cuts on your craft projects. This will help you avoid mistakes.

  • Always use caution when working with sharp scissors. Do not let children use decorative scissors without supervision. After use, clean decorative scissors and store in a secure, dry location for safekeeping.
