Handmade hats are fun because you can make them in any style to fit any wearer. A crocheted hat can become a ski cap, a sombrero, or even a chicken costume. Make a basic crochet beanie and add some unique touches to turn your hat into a chicken topper in no time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Worsted Weight Yarn: yellow or white, orange, black
  • "Fun Fur" yarn: yellow, white, or orange
  • Felt squares (optional): orange, white, black
  • Optional: fabric glue, needle and thread
  • Crochet hook, approximately size "H"
  • Yarn needle

    Make a Chicken Hat

  1. Step 1

Crochet a basic beanie using yellow or white yarn.
Stitch abbreviations used: sc = single crochet; ch = chain; sl st = slip stitch.
Start by crocheting a magic adjustable ring (see reference section).
Row 1: Make 10 sc in the circle, attach with a sl st to the first sc. Ch 1.
Row 1: 2 sc in each sc around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Ch. 1
Row 3: (2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in next sc) around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Ch. 1
Row 4: (2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in next 2 sc) around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Ch. 1
Row 5: (2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in next 3 sc) around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Ch. 1
Continue increasing stitches, as above, until the desired circumference of your hat is reached. Then make sc in every sc around until your hat is the correct length. Bind off.

  2. Step 2

Make facial features out of yarn (option 1).
Crochet two white circles for eyes. Crochet two smaller black circles for pupils. Sew the pupils onto the eyes using a yarn needle and black yarn.
Crochet an orange triangle for the beak.

  3. Step 3

Make facial features out of felt (option 2).
Cut two white circles for eyes and two smaller black circles for pupils. Use fabric glue or a needle and thread to attach the pupils to the eyes.
Cut a triangle out of orange felt for the beak.

  4. Step 4

    Make a feathery topper.
Using your "fun fur" yarn, chain 10, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Row 1: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each sc across.
    Row 2: ch 10 more.
Row 3: In new ch stitches, repeat row 1.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 three more times. Bind off, leaving another long tail for sewing.

  5. Step 5

    Assemble your hat.
Sew the facial features onto the front of the hat, using a yarn needle and yarn (option 1) or craft glue or needle and thread (option 2).
Using your long ends, attach the feathery topper to the top of your hat.
    Weave in all ends.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your hat is too big, go back and unravel some of the increase rows, then continue your sc stitches around. If your hat is too small, add a few more increase rows.
  • If using fabric glue to attach the facial features, make sure the glue dries completely and the features are securely attached.
