Instructions

    • 1

Remove the dead rat and dispose of it properly.

    • 2

Clean the location where the rat was found as you would normally using cleaning products such as detergent or bleach.

    • 3

Open up all windows in the rooms, allowing the rooms to air out. If weather does not permit the opening of windows, a fan can fill in.

    • 4

Slice an onion and place one slice on a plate. Place slices of onions on plates in every room that you want to rid the smell of dead rats from. Let the onion sit overnight. The onion will absorb any foul odor present in the rooms.

    • 5

Remove the onion the next morning. Place a small bowl filled with vinegar in each room. Vinegar is a potent liquid that will remove odors as well. Allow the vinegar to sit in the rooms overnight.

    • 6

Remove the vinegar from the rooms. Spay a commercial odor eliminator in each room. This will also mask the smell of onion and vinegar. Spray at least every two hours until the smells are eliminated.

Tips & Warnings

  • If blood is present on any surface in a room, remove the blood with hydrogen peroxide. Do not use hydrogen peroxide on fabrics or carpets as it will bleach the fabric. If you do not have access to hydrogen peroxide, use pure bleach instead. The purpose is to disinfect the areas where the rat was killed so as not to leave bacterial remnants that could be potentially life threatening.
