Remove Mold and Mildew from Patio Furniture

Patio furniture cushions can form mold and become mildew stained from being outside. Mold and mildew is unsightly and nobody wants to sit on mold and mildew. Mold and mildew stains should be cleaned as soon as you see them starting to form. Mold and mildew stains need to be cleaned off of patio furniture cushions before you store your patio furniture for winter. If the mold and mildew stains aren’t cleaned they will become permanent.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Add ½ cup of white vinegar, ½ cup of Borax and 2 cups of hot water into a small bucket. Mix well until the Borax is dissolved.

  2. Step 2

With a soft bristled brush gently scrub mold and mildew stains. Always test a hidden area for colorfastness.

  3. Step 3

If stains are stubborn, wet the mold or mildew stains with lemon juice and sprinkle Borax onto the stains. Use a soft scrub brush to remove stains.

  4. Step 4

If mold and mildew stains still haven’t come out try bleach. Be sure to test for colorfastness. Start with a 50-50 solution of bleach and water to clean stains.

  5. Step 5

After cleaning, allow patio furniture cushions to thoroughly dry in the sun before storing them for the season.
