- 1 cup white sugar.
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsps. of vanilla or almond extract
- 1-1/2 cups flour
- 1 tsp. of baking powder
- 1 tsp. of baking soda
- 3 tbsps. cocoa
- 2 tsps. ground cinnamon
- 2 tsps. nutmeg
- 1/4 cup crushed toasted almonds or hazelnuts
- Fondant

Start with a birthday cake design. Let your child have a say in the design. Think about the his likes and dislikes. Have her talk about what they want the finished product to look like. Be realistic. If you've never made a cake before, start simple. Make sure you have allot time beforehand to make the cake in time for the party.

Purchase ingredients at least several days before the party.

Purchase fondant for a smoothly elegant look to top the cake. Purchase icing if you prefer a more homemade topping or just like the taste of butter and cream.

Make a basic cake. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees. Combining ½ cup of butter with 1 cup of white sugar. Add in 2 eggs and a tsp. of vanilla or almond extract. Mix one-and-a-half cups of flour with 1 tsp. of baking powder and a tsp. of baking soda. Mix all ingredients together to form a cake batter. Grease and flour a pan. Pour the mixture into the pan. Make a chocolate cake by adding 3 tbsps. of cocoa to the mixture. Add a hint of spice with 2 tsps. of ground cinnamon and nutmeg. If you like nuts, add a 1/4 cup of crushed toasted almonds or hazelnuts.

Take the cake out of the oven and decorate it. Roll out a sheet of fondant and place over the cake's top. Tie a ribbon around the end of the cake. Scatter edible rose petals on the top. Turn the cake into a hockey rink. Top the cake with white icing. Create a hockey rink from thin black icing. Add a pair of hockey skates on top sculpted from fondant.
