1
Buy a pair of pants that fit you well in the waist, hips and rear. The pants should be stylish and comfortable. The leg style does not matter as long as the pants are relatively tight to midcalf. Baggy pants also can be made into capris, but the style will look different.

2
Put on the pants. Make sure the fabric in both legs is hanging straight down with no wrinkles or folds, then use the chalk to mark the inner part of one of the legs at about the midpoint of your calf. The calf muscle swells near the top of your lower leg; you want the chalk line to be just below the peak of that swell.

3
Standing evenly, mark the same place on the other leg. Stand with your legs together and compare them to ensure that the lines are even.

4
Remove the pants and measure 1 inch below the chalk line. Draw a new line all the way around both legs with the chalk, then cut along the lower line on both legs. At this point you may want to try on the pants again to be sure they are even. If you like the ragged look, you can stop here. The chalk will wash out or brush off.

5
Turn the pants inside out. Fold up the bottom of each leg until the chalk mark is on the bottom edge. Repeat on the other leg and pin both cuffs all the way around, with a pin every inch to inch and a half.
-
6
Sew along the top and bottom of the folded material on the inside of the leg, either by hand using a back stitch or with a sewing machine, removing the pins as you go. Tie off the ends of the thread.
