How to Remove Scuff Marks From Tile Floors

M.H. Dyer

It's difficult to avoid an occasional scuff mark on a tile floor. The culprit could be hard-sole shoes, furniture, even children's toys. Removing them doesn't require any special equipment or supplies. You probably already have what you need in your kitchen or utility room.

Warning

To be on the safe side, test the suggested treatments on an inconspicuous area of your floor to make sure they don't cause discoloration or damage.

  1. For small scuff marks, use an art eraser. Rub it back and forth until the mark disappears. Use a white or light-colored eraser; a pink eraser may leave a stain.

  2. Cut a small cross in a tennis ball with a craft knife. Push the end of a broomstick into the cut and erase the scuff marks. This method is especially useful for large scuff marks.

  3. Spray a small amount of WD-40 on a cloth and rub it into the scuff mark. Once the scuff mark is removed, wipe the area with a dry cloth.

  4. Clean stubborn or large scuff marks with a non-scratch dish scrubber. Rub gently to prevent damaging the tile finish.

  5. Spray a small amount of non-stick cooking spray on a soft cloth to wipe off the mark. Dry the area thoroughly with a clean cloth.
