Things You'll Need:
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Marker
- Plastic Sheet
-
Step 1
At the fabric store, you will find a large sheet of frosted plastic. This is called 'Clear Template Plastic'. The sheet size is 12" by 18". The price is $3 to $4. It is made by Dritz. Buy this plastic to make your templates.
-
Step 2
Decide what size template your FINAL size will be. (This is the size of your square you want after all the edges are sewn) For this example we will use 8" by 1".
-
Step 3
Before you measure your square out, you will have to add 1/4 inch on all sides. This is the standard allowance for sewing.
-
Step 4
Since our square is 8" long, we will have to add 1/4 inch to each end. So we will make our square 8 + 1/4 + 1/4. This makes your length, 8 1/2 inches.
-
Step 5
For the height, we want 1 inch. Adding 1/4 to each side will give you the measurement of 1 + 1/4 + 1/4. This makes your height, 1 1/2 inches.
-
Step 6
Take you measurements and transfer it to your template. You will make your square 8 1/2" long and 1 1/2" tall.
-
Step 7
Before you cut your template, double check your measurements. Make sure it is the correct size.
-
Step 8
Once you are sure it is the correct size, take your scissors and cut on your line that you made.
-
Step 9
You can add your 1/4 inch seam allowance on the template so that you will know what will actually be seen in the square. Remember, it is see through and you can center your new template over the spot you want on your quilt. (Image coming soon)
-
Step 10
Congratulations. You now have a template that you can use to mark and cut your fabric squares. The plastic is thick enough where it will not bend like cardboard will.
-
Step 11
If you are making more than one square for your quilt, make sure you mark each template so you know the exact size of each.
