How to Get an Inexpensive Sofa Makeover

Buying a new sofa may fall outside of your available budget, but you can still get a new look in your living room with an inexpensive makeover. The options range from changing the entire look of the sofa to updating the accents that affect the overall feel of the furniture piece. Pick and choose the updates you want done to your couch based on your budget and how you want the finished product to look.

Things You'll Need

  • Slipcover
  • Fabric paint
  • Sofa legs
  • Paint
  • Throw blanket
  • Throw pillows
  • Wall art
  • Cover an old or stained couch with an inexpensive slipcover from a discount store.

  • Paint a design onto the inexpensive slipcover using fabric paint. Use stencils for a finished look, or paint a freehand design. Practice on part of the slipcover that won't regularly show.

  • Change the legs of the couch for a new look. Another option is to paint or refinish the existing legs on the couch to update the look.

  • Paint other wooden parts on the sofa, such as exposed wooden arms. Another option is to strip the wood and refinish it with a darker or lighter varnish color.

  • Place a throw blanket over the back of the couch to add color or to cover an unattractive couch. Choose a blanket color or pattern that complements the other furnishings in the room.

  • Replace the cushions on the couch if they are removable. Use large pillows or cushions as replacements. You can also re-cover the cushions with fabric to contrast with the fabric on the rest of the couch.

  • Arrange small throw pillows at the ends or along the entire sofa. Choose pillows in different shapes, sizes and patterns for variety.

  • Change the look of the sofa by redecorating the wall behind it. Paint the wall a different color for a varied backdrop for the couch. Hang different artwork to draw the eye away from a couch you don't like.
