Instructions

    • 1

Cover an old or stained couch with an inexpensive slipcover from a discount store.

    • 2

Paint a design onto the inexpensive slipcover using fabric paint. Use stencils for a finished look, or paint a freehand design. Practice on part of the slipcover that won't regularly show.

    • 3

Change the legs of the couch for a new look. Another option is to paint or refinish the existing legs on the couch to update the look.

    • 4

Paint other wooden parts on the sofa, such as exposed wooden arms. Another option is to strip the wood and refinish it with a darker or lighter varnish color.

    • 5

Place a throw blanket over the back of the couch to add color or to cover an unattractive couch. Choose a blanket color or pattern that complements the other furnishings in the room.

    • 6

Replace the cushions on the couch if they are removable. Use large pillows or cushions as replacements. You can also re-cover the cushions with fabric to contrast with the fabric on the rest of the couch.

    • 7

Arrange small throw pillows at the ends or along the entire sofa. Choose pillows in different shapes, sizes and patterns for variety.

    • 8

Change the look of the sofa by redecorating the wall behind it. Paint the wall a different color for a varied backdrop for the couch. Hang different artwork to draw the eye away from a couch you don't like.
