How to Make Beautiful Hospital Type Gowns for Bedridden Patients
This is a straightforward way to adjust everyday clothing such as nightgowns, dresses, and tops which makes them easy to put on and take off when helping to care for someone confined to bed. Making this small adjustment to everyday clothing is a nice alternative to hospital gowns and gives our loved ones a much deserved feeling of normalcy.
Things You'll Need
- item of clothing to be altered (i.e. nightgown, dress, top, etc...)
- Velcro
- thread
- scissors
- common pins
- sewing machine (can be done with needle and thread but is more time consuming)

1
Wash and dry the article of clothing to be altered. Lay the garment face down on a clean work surface. Taking the scissors slit the article of clothing right up the center of the back. Then, using the common pins, pin a half inch hem down each side of the slit that you have just made in the garment.

2
Thread your sewing machine (or needle) and carefully sew a straight line down both side hems that you have just pinned. Remove the common pins after the hems have been sewn.

To cut the Velcro, leave both sides stuck together and cut two pieces approximately 1 1/2 inches long by 1 inch wide. Separate the pieces of Velcro then pin one piece on each side of the neckline (make sure that you pin one side of the Velcro to the outside of the garment while pinning the other piece to the inside of the neckline). Repeat this process with the second piece of Velcro approximately six inches below the first pieces.

Once you have pinned the Velcro in place, sew around all four sides of each piece making sure you sew the pieces firmly in place. When the Velcro has been firmly affixed to the garment, remove the pins, trim the threads and your garment is ready to go.

Tips & Warnings
When putting this garment on simply undo the back and put the person's arms in the sleeves as you would a hospital gown and then simply do up the back closures.
I try to keep the Velcro closures above the waistline to make any changing of undergarments that much easier.
If you want to eliminate the sewing of hems, simply choose fabrics that won't fray when cut, for example jersey knit nightshirts work great.
I always choose soft fabrics with nice prints and or bright colors for a cheery garment that is a real pick me up for the person who wears it as well anyone that is with them.
