With a little creativity, you can make your own custom cut tee shirt in about half an hour. Buy a new, blank tee shirt from an arts-and-crafts or clothing store. Look at pictures online for fun design ideas.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Lay the shirt flat on a smooth surface like a table. Smooth as many wrinkles and folds as possible. If you cut a wrinkled shirt, you will get a jagged cut and may ruin your design.

  2. Step 2

Draw a design on your tee shirt, starting at the neckline. For a simple, feminine design, cut away the tee shirt's ribbing at the neck. Cut the shirt along the seam line. Cut the front edge into a scoop for a low-cut shirt. Mark the sleeves where you want to cut them. If you remove the ribbing and seams, the edges will roll up after washing.

  3. Step 3

Cut out along your sleeve marks with a sharp pair of scissors. Try to keep the edges as smooth as possible. Use a razor knife on a cutting surface for intricate designs. Trim any rough edges so they are clean and straight.

  4. Step 4

Iron the edges of your cuts under 1/2 inch to create a hem and keep the fabric from fraying. Secure the ironed hems with a little fabric glue.

  5. Step 5

Add embellishments. Write your favorite phrase with a fabric marker, or apply beads and buttons.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wash the tee shirt as usual. If it wrinkles or rolls up too much, iron it flat. Use a large men's tee shirt for a soft nightgown, cutting away the sleeves and hems for extra softness.
