Paint your ceiling and wake up to a blue sky every day. Faux finish a sky with clouds and add some brightness to your day. Faux finishes are custom paint jobs that create three dimensional scenes in your home or business. Use paint and glaze to create this special effect. Adding clouds to a blue ceiling is easier than you think. Add a blue sky to your day and a one-of-a-kind look to your living space.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paint
  • Glaze
  • Paint buckets
  • Brushes
  • Rags
  1. Step 1

Decide how you want your ceiling to look. Sketch out any ideas you may have, and create a mental picture of where you would place clouds on your ceiling. To determine which blue shade to select, look through decorating magazines to find just the right shade of blue. Home improvement stores have paint samples that you can look at and bring home.

  2. Step 2

Paint your ceiling blue. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the paint container for drying time.

  3. Step 3

Mix the glaze with the paint for your clouds. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the glaze container.

  4. Step 4

Dab a rag into the glaze and paint mixture. Dab onto your blue ceiling.

  5. Step 5

Experiment with how you create your clouds. You may choose to dab, swirl or move the rag around in circles. Practice on a paper bag if you need to gain confidence.

  6. Step 6

Add clouds to the rest of your blue ceiling. Check your clouds for paint consistency and style. Clouds are all different, but you do want a balanced effect.

  7. Step 7

Step back and look at your work. You may choose to remove paint by wiping cloud areas with a clean rag. You may add paint by dabbing or swirling more paint onto existing clouds.

  8. Step 8

Allow drying time for your clouds. Observe your ceiling from different angles to make sure you are satisfied with your work.

Tips & Warnings
  • Glaze lengthens the drying time for paint. This gives you time to wipe away or add paint, creating the faux finish you prefer.
  • You can always paint over any sections of sky you are not happy with and reapply your clouds.
