Instructions

  1. How to Paint Over Knotty Pine Kitchen Cabinets

    • 1

Remove the hardware, doors and drawers from your kitchen cabinets.

    • 2

Wash the cabinets, doors and drawers to remove any grease and dirt. This requires warm water and trisodiumphosphate, also known as TSP. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for mixing the water and TSP, and use as directed. Rinse the cabinetry with clean water and allow to dry completely.

    • 3

Some knotty pine cabinetry has a glossy or semigloss surface. If this is the case, use sandpaper to rough up the surface a bit, thereby giving the primer something to grab onto.

    • 4

Inspect the wood's knots. Some of the larger ones may have bled over time and probably have cracks in them. Remove any resin with a scraper. If you do not want the cracks to show through the paint, you'll need to fill them with wood filler. Use a putty knife to apply the filler, let the filler dry and sand it smooth.

    • 5

Purchase a stain-blocking primer that successfully covers knots---read product labels. Two popular products are Kilz and B-I-N. Apply one coat of primer. Let the primer dry completely before applying a coat or two of paint.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider using satin or semigloss paint; both are hard-wearing and easy to clean with soap and water.
