This article will take you through the step by step instructions of how to fix a crooked garage door from an experienced garage door professional.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Vice Grips
  • Six Foot Ladder
  1. Step 1

On the highest side of the garage door, vice grip the flat part of the vertical track above the bottom roller to prevent the door from going up any higher.

  2. Step 2

Walk to the other side of the door. With another vice grip in one hand, use your other hand to lift the door until it is even.

  3. Step 3

Vice Grip below the bottom roller on the flat part of the vertical track. This will prevent the door from falling.

  4. Step 4

On that same side, set up your ladder where you are able to reach above your garage door.

  5. Step 5

When on your ladder, look above your garage door and you will notice a cable is unwound. Rewind the cable onto the spool/drum. It is very important that the beginning of the cable be wound into the first groove of the spool/drum that is closest to the track. After the beginning is wound into the first groove, the rest of the cable can wind in any order as long as it's on the drum/spool. (If unable to completely wrap cable on spool/drum, lift that side of the door higher, re-vice grip, and try winding again.)

  6. Step 6

Once the cable is rewound, make sure all rollers are in the track. If any rollers are out, twist track and force roller back in.

  7. Step 7

Before releasing vice grips, make sure the vertical tracks are straight. If not, pull the vertical track towards door opening until straight. Now release both vice grips and the door should work properly.
