A quick way to crochet a giraffe blanket is to use a Tunisian/afghan crochet hook and the Tunisian/afghan crochet "knit stitch." A Tunisian hook looks like a long knitting needle with a crochet hook on the end. Stitches are worked on and off the hook like knitting, but using only one hook. The Tunisian crochet knit stitch gives you a smooth, knitlike surface on the right side, onto which you can use yarn to cross-stitch a pattern in any design of your choosing, including a giraffe.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Worsted-weight yarn for the blanket
  • Worsted-weight yarn for the giraffe
  • Tunisian crochet hook, size 8 or slightly larger
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

    Blanket Construction

  1. Step 1

Download a free cross-stitch pattern for a giraffe from a website like Stitch-Cross.com, or draw your own giraffe on graph paper, where one block equals one stitch. Use colored pencils to make it easier to match yarn to the blocks in the illustration.

  2. Step 2

View the giraffe cross-stitch chart and count how many rows and columns it has.

  3. Step 3

Pick a yarn for the blanket that will contrast well with the colors you want to use for the giraffe. For example, if the giraffe will be yellow and brown, don't use brown or yellow for the blanket, or the giraffe image will not clearly appear.

  4. Step 4

Crochet a large rectangle using the Tunisian crochet knit stitch (see section 2). The rectangle should be at least 10 to 20 rows longer than the height of the giraffe cross-stitch grid, and 10 to 20 stitches wider than the grid. This will allow for a border around the giraffe image.

  5. Step 5

Count your stitches and rows as you crochet, and use a stitch marker or bobby pin to mark the center of the blanket when you get to it. This will be your starting point for cross-stitching the giraffe onto the blanket.

Locate the center of the giraffe cross-stitch grid. This will be your starting stitch. String yarn for the giraffe on a yarn needle and follow the cross-stitch pattern out from the center. Stitch X's onto the right side of the blanket, using the spaces between stitches as the holes for the cross-stitch. Weave in loose ends as you work.

  8. Step 1

Chain the number of stitches you need for the width of the blanket.

  9. Step 2

Insert the Tunisian crochet hook into the second chain from the hook, yarn over, and pull up a loop onto the hook. Repeat this across the chain. You will end up with one loop on the hook for every chain stitch you started with.

  10. Step 3

Loop the yarn over the hook and pull through the first loop on the hook, as if you were making a chain stitch. Then yarn over (YO) again and pull through the next TWO loops on the crochet hook, similar to completing a single crochet stitch. Repeat the YO and pulling through two loops across the rest of the row until you have only one loop left on the hook. Your row is now complete.

  11. Step 4

Insert the hook between the vertical bars of the second stitch from the hook, go through to the back side of the work, yarn over and pull up a loop through to the front. Repeat this across the row until you again have one loop on your hook for every stitch.

  12. Step 5

Work the stitches off like you did in step 3.

  13. Step 6

Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the blanket is as long as you want it.

Fasten off when you have one stitch left on the hook after a step 3 row by working a regular single crochet stitch (YO, pull through, YO, pull through two loops) between the vertical bars of every stitch across the row. After the last stitch, with one loop remaining, YO, pull loop through, cut yarn and pull the tail to tighten the last stitch.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a crochet hook one size larger for the starting chain if you find you're making the starting chain too tight. Use a smaller hook for the rest of the blanket.
  • Do not create your stitches too tightly or the fabric will curl. When you pull up new loops during the first pass on a row, try to do this loosely.
