How to Plant Succulents in a Strawberry Pot

Succulents, such as hen and chicks, burro's tail, and aloe, thrive in dry, sandy soil in arid conditions, making them favorites for care-free gardens. These fleshy plants typically reproduce via offsets or pups, creating a cluster of tiny plantlets within months. When planted in shallow dishes or strawberry pots, the tiny plants multiply to fill the openings, creating an attractive mass of foliage in many shapes and sizes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot with a piece of screen to prevent soil from escaping through the hole.

    • 2

Fill the bottom of the strawberry jar with potting mix for succulents until you reach the first holes on the sides.

    • 3

Insert the roots of the succulent plant through the hole. Spread the roots over the soil, and position the plant so the foliage extends outward.

    • 4

Fill in around the roots with soil, and press lightly to secure the roots.

    • 5

Continue filling the pot with soil until you reach the next layer of holes. Insert another succulent into the hole following the same procedure.

    • 6

Continue filling the strawberry container with soil and adding succulents until soil is within 1 inch of the rim of the pot.

    • 7

Plant several succulents in the top of the container, and firm the soil around the roots.

    • 8

Sprinkle a thin layer of crushed rock or gravel over the top of the soil for decorative effect.

    • 9

Water the soil thoroughly until water runs freely through the bottom of the pot.

    • 10

Allow the soil to dry completely before you water it again. Typically, succulents require watering once or twice a month during periods of active growth. Reduce watering during the winter when growth slows.

Tips & Warnings
