Things You'll Need:
- You
- Ginger root
- Vegetable Peeler
- Sink, trash can or other receptacle to catch peelings
-
Step 1
Buy a ginger root at the grocery store and bring it home. Look for firm roots with unwrinkled skin and a strong ginger-y aroma. Larger, harder roots have better flavor.
-
Step 2
Snap off a small piece and put the rest in a ziploc bag in the vegetable crisper drawer of your refrigerator. If stored properly it should stay fresh for at least eight weeks.
-
Step 3
Rinse the root under running water to remove any dirt and debris.
-
Step 4
Vegetable peeler--the critical tool for peeling ginger.Grab your vegetable peeler and your ginger. Stand over your sink or trash can. Place your peeler at one end of the root, and slide the peeler across the root, either toward you or away from you, depending on which end you started at. It's just like peeling a carrot or potato.

on 7/13/2009 Good article. I could have used this information some time back, I don't know how long I struggled with peeling it the hard (and wasteful) way.
