Making your own soap, once considered an old-fashioned task of necessity, is now a hobby for many. This hobby is also beneficial in that the soap maker can control what ingredients are in the soap that her family is using. Many have chosen to eliminate any of the chemicals that are found in soaps manufactured by large companies and produce their own organic soap. Follow a few steps to learn how to make two medium-sized bars or about six small decorative organic soaps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stainless steel container ¼ cup cold water Medium-size pot or pan Wooden spoon ½ oz lye 1/3 cup organic lard 1/8 cup coconut oil Plastic molds Saran wrap
  1. Step 1

Pour the cold water into the stainless steel container.

  2. Step 2

Slowly stir in the lye, using a wooden spoon.

  3. Step 3

Obtain organic lard, which is just clean pork fat from animals that have not been injected with hormones. This should be readily available at any health food grocery store. Warm the lard gently in a separate pot or pan. Warm it just to the point where it becomes pourable.

  4. Step 4

Add the lard slowly to the water and lye mixture, stirring with the wooden spoon. Continue stirring slowly but continuously until the mixture begins to thicken.

  5. Step 5

Add the coconut oil in the same manner, stirring it in slowly.

  6. Step 6

Pour the soap mixture into plastic molds of your choosing. Candy molds with impressions work well to make small, decorative soaps. Cover with Saran wrap and allow it to sit overnight.

  7. Step 7

Take the soaps out of the molds and spread them out on a drying rack or something similar so that air can circulate around them in the drying process. Let them sit for two weeks, and your homemade organic soap is ready.

Tips & Warnings
  • Lard (pork fat) is considered better than both tallow (beef fat) and vegetable oils regarding its gentleness to your skin.
  • Lye is very caustic and can burn you; handle it with care.
